Ulcerative colitis,
This
disease is one of the main reasons unknown in colonic mucosa layer of
inflammatory lesions, ulcers mainly erosion. Clinical manifestations of
abdominal pain, diarrhea, fecal blood, pus and mucus, accompanied urgent
re-wrapped, and he may temporarily alleviate the pain. Course time the repeated
attacks, patients were anemia, weight loss, low heat and so on. No specific
laboratory tests of the pathogens found colitis. The disease may be related to
immune, genetic, infectious and the spirit of the relevant factors. Young was
particularly prevalent in men slightly more than women. The pathogen made good
in Europe and the Americas.
In acupoint stimulation methods, the use of more than moxibustion LAW, both
traditional moxibustion with skin, but also the application of modern Meridian moxibustion irradiation. Secondly, the use of
somatic injections, ear acupuncture, catgut embedding such as France and
heavy needle. Acupuncture on the efficacy of the disease, at home and abroad
scholars have acupuncture and Western medicine were made, such as that used

Performance. For acute diarrhea, filiform needles and reducing techniques are
used. For chronic diarrhea, Zhangmen (LR 13) and Taichong (LR 3) are needled
with mild reducing and reinforcing techniques or reducing tech-nique, the rest
acupoints are needled with reinforcing techniques. For predominance of cold and
asthenia of qi and yang, the needling is followed by moxibustion and
cupping.
Acupuncture is becoming one of the more
popular alternative and complimentary therapies used by IBS sufferers to help
alleviate symptoms. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine that is designed
to restore health by improving and bringing balance to qi - the body’s natural
energy flow. Acupuncture works to restore the proper function of organs,
muscles, glands, nerves and vessels.
How can acupuncture improve IBS symptoms?
Acupuncture is recognized as being an effective therapy for treating the
following conditions which are often symptoms of IBS:
As was previously mentioned, acupuncture is
based on improving and brining balance to qi that flows through all of the 14
unseen channels in the body known as meridians. A person with IBS usually has a
deficiency of qi in the spleen, lung, liver, kidney and large intestine
meridians, so these are the areas that will likely be targeted during an
acupuncture session. That being said, you need to understand that each person
is treated differently depending on where their discomfort is located.
In order to help improve the qi flow within
the targeted meridians, tiny, solid, disposable needles are individually
inserted into specific acupoints within the body. How deep the needles are
inserted depends on the thickness of the muscle. Acupoints (trigger points),
are precise points of the body where the meridians surface has deeply
penetrated into the tissues and organs.
The insertion of the needle is usually
painless and is a sensation often described as a mosquito bite. Most people
only feel a slight achy or numbing feeling in the targeted area.
After the needle has been inserted, they
may be twirled or connected to an electrical current to help stimulate the
targeted meridian. Needles may be left in between 20 – 60 minutes. All
sensations that are experienced during an acupuncture session disappear with
the removal of the needles.
Aside from acupuncture needles, another
popular technique that acupuncturists use for IBS is moxibustion. This is a
method in which mugwort herb is burned over precise acupoints. Moxibustion is
used because it is believed to penetrate deeper into the body than the needles.
Although Chinese medicine believes that
acupuncture is successful at relieving symptoms due to reestablishing balance
to qi, Western medicine believe that acupuncture treatment causes inflammation
in the body, which causes it to release natural pain killing hormones -
endorphins. Despite what the actual truth may be, it is clear that for many IBS
sufferers, acupuncture has provided them relief from abdominal pain, cramping,
bloating, constipation and diarrhea.
Acupuncture is a safe alternative treatment
for most people, but you should discuss acupuncture treatment with your doctor
first before engaging in the therapy. You should also know that it often takes
several acupuncture sessions before a person begins to feel relief from their
symptoms. Finally, make sure you seek treatment from a qualified and
experienced acupuncturist.
Ulcerative
Colitis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods
Ulcerative colitis (UC) refers to a disease in which the
lining of the colon (the large intestine) becomes inflamed. It occurs at any
age. The disease may involve the entire colon (pancolitis), only the rectum
(ulcerative proctitis) or, more commonly, somewhere between the two. The amount
of the colon affected usually predicts the severity of the disease. The disease
usually begins in the rectum or the rectum and the sigmoid colon (the lower end
of the large intestine) but may eventually spread along part or all of the
large intestine. In patients with ulcerative colitis, ulcers and inflammation
of the inner lining of the colon lead to symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea,
and rectal bleeding. Like Crohn's disease, another common IBD, ulcerative colitis can
be painful and debilitating and sometimes can lead to life-threatening
complications. Ulcerative colitis is a rare disease, with an incidence of about
one person per 10,000 in North America. The
disease tends to be more common in northern areas.
Ulcerative colitis is defined as mild, moderate or severe,
according to the frequency of diarrhoea, the presence of blood and how
generally unwell the person is. Ulcerative proctitis, which is confined to the
rectum, is a very common and relatively benign form of ulcerative colitis.
Ulcerative colitis is more common than Crohn's disease. The disease may involve
the entire colon (pancolitis), only the rectum (ulcerative proctitis) or, more
commonly, somewhere between the two. It can be difficult to diagnose because
its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders and to another type of
IBD called Crohn's disease. Blood tests and stool samples help diagnosis, but
the key test is internal examination of the bowel, and biopsy. It most commonly
begin during adolescence and early adulthood, but they also can begin during
childhood and later in life. Ulcerative colitis is an intermittent disease,
with periods of exacerbated symptoms, and periods that are relatively
symptom-free.
Causes of Ulcerative colitis
The common causes and risk factor's of Ulcerative colitis
include the following:
The exect cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown.
Abnormal activation of the immune system in the intestines.
A family history of Ulcerative colitis.
Smoking.
Generalized enhanced reactivity against intestinal bacterial
antigens.
Environmental factors such as nutrition and exposure to various infections.
Symptoms of Ulcerative colitis
Some sign and symptoms related to Ulcerative colitis are as
follows:
Loss of body fluids and nutrients.
Weight loss.
Nausea.
Abdominal cramps and pain.
Night sweats.
Fatigue.
Loss of appetite.
Fever.
Extreme tiredness.
Treatment of Ulcerative colitis
Here is list of the methods for treating Ulcerative colitis:
Aminosalicylates, drugs that contain 5-aminosalicyclic acid
(5-ASA), help control inflammation.
Drugs such as azathioprine and mercaptopurine have been used
to maintain remissions in people with ulcerative colitis who would otherwise
need long-term corticosteroid therapy.
Taking nutritional supplements to restore normal growth and development
in children and teens.
Steroids can help reduce inflammation, but they have
numerous side effects, including a puffy face, excessive facial hair, night
sweats, insomnia and hyperactivity. Long-term use of these drugs in children can
lead to stunted growth.
Surgery is used in people who have severe symptoms that are
not controlled by medicines, who have unacceptable side effects from medicines,
or who have a very high risk of colon cancer because of extensive inflammation in the whole
colon.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
covers a number of bowel disorders. It can describe colitis, which affects the
colon, or regional enteritis (known as Crohn's disease), which affects the
small intestine. The cause of IBD is still unknown. There may be several
factors, such as genetic predisposition, infectious agent, and auto-immunity
involved in its pathogenesis. The extraintestinal manifestations which may
accompany these disorders, such as arthritis, pericholangitis may suggest
auto-immune phenomena and that therapeutic agents, such as corticosteroids may
exert their effects through immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.
Colitis
The cause of colitis, an inflammation of the large intestine, is not properly
understood, although a lack of fiber in the diet is thought to be partly to
blame. Symptoms of this illness include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and sometimes
blood or mucus in the motions.
Treatment
Diet and Nutrition Follow a wholefood diet with plenty of brown rice, fruit
(stewed apples especially), and vegetables. As colitis can sometimes be caused
by allergies to certain common foods - milk products and cereals such as wheat
or oats, for example - cut them out of your diet for at least two weeks to see
if there is any improvement. Eat plenty of garlic or, if you do not like it,
take garlic capsules.
Consult a qualified practitioner/therapist for:
Herbal Medicine Slippery elm to reduce inflammation is often prescribed.
Homeopathy Podophyllum 6c and Arsenicum alb. 6c are particularly helpful.
Acupressure and Acupuncture Both of these can be effective.
Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is caused by recurrent inflammation of the small intestine. The
digestive system can also become damaged, reducing its ability to absorb
nutrients from food. Symptoms of the disease include pain, fever, diarrhea, and
weight loss.
Treatment
Relaxation Techniques Yoga, meditation, and biofeedback can reduce stress,
which often plays a major role in this disease.
Aromatherapy Essential oil of lavender is particularly beneficial. Massage
This, together with regular exercise, is very beneficial. Herbal Medicine
Slippery elm is recommended, alternated with astringent teas such as agrimony.
You can have Crohn’s disease for quite a long time before your doctor
figures out what is wrong with you and gives you the correct diagnosis. This
is because the disease has many confusing symptoms, and it can be diagnosed
as many other things before the true cause of your misery is found. Your pain
and problems may not make any sense until the true diagnosis of Crohn’s is
made. You may find that the treatments you are getting from your doctor are
not enough for you, or you may find that you cannot get relief not matter
what you try. Some patients begin to wonder if acupuncture and crohns relief
might be things that can go together.
Crohn’s disease can be diagnosed at almost any point during adulthood, but
there the majority of sufferers find out they have it when they are
teenagers. When one or both parents have Crohn’s disease, it is likely that
their children may develop it also. Ongoing studies are suggesting that
Crohn’s might also be a result of environment, as spouses are occasionally
diagnosed. This would mean it is not just a genetic disease. In most
cases, your diagnosis will mean changes in your lifestyle, but it is not
normally fatal. There are drugs that are proven to help some patients, but
others are looking for a different, more natural approach. This is when they
may turn to acupuncture.
This practice has been around for centuries, and has helped patients with
the symptoms of Crohn’s. You won’t know if it will help you unless you try
it. This from of alternative medicine is based on the theory that the body is
a mass of energy, and there are energy channels running through the body.
These are called meridians. When they become blocked for any reason, the
energy cannot run freely. This stops the body from healing itself,
and that can lead to many health problems. Acupuncture uses tiny needles
to activate points along these different meridians to release the energy so
that it flows freely and allows the body to regain its balance.
Severe weight loss is a huge problem with those who have Crohn’s. The
intestines are often the main focus for the disease, and this is why many
vitamins and nutrients are not absorbed into the body. Calories are not
absorbed, and the body is just not getting what it needs to function
properly. Crohn’s does not just affect the intestines, however, as it can
flare up at point along the digestive tract. When acupuncture is performed
on someone with Crohn’s disease, the points chosen for the needles will be
those that lie along the meridians relating to the digestive system. The
points can also be stimulated with the skilled hands of a chiropractor, where
pressure rather than needles are used to stimulate the body.
The jury is out as to whether acupuncture and Crohns go together, but
there are many that swear by this type of therapy. The best way to find out
if it will work for you is to try for yourself. You can usually find a
qualified acupuncturist in your own community. Keep in mind that you should
continue to seek medical treatment while you are undoing acupuncture and
crohns treatment to be sure your body is getting what it needs.
Also remember to communicate how you are feeling with both your doctor and
acupuncturist to ensure they both know your current condition.
Chinese research showed their conclusion, they randomized controlled trials or
clinical controlled trials of acupuncture and moxibustion for interfere of
ulcerative colitis in recent 10 years were reviewed and Meta-analysis was made
for the literature results.they think that The therapeutic effect of acupuncture
and moxibustion on ulcerative colitis is superior to that of western
medicine with safety and less adverse reactions.
So,what's your opinion?
Recently another research from China.---Warming needle moxibustion is a
better therapy for chronic colitis with no side effects.
Patient's experience...My pre-existing feelings aside, I
must confess that I cannot in good conscience recommend acupuncture as a therapy
for Ulcerative Colitis.........energized and a bit euphoric. It was quite a nice
and relaxing experience...........But it did nothing for my Ulcerative Colitis
symptoms. Not a lick of noticeable difference. I would love to say that it did,
that it fixed all my problems, but it just isn't true. I think that things like
acupuncture take a certain amount of belief in order to achieve results, and at
that particular time....Full

Answer:There are no studies of acupuncture in the treatment of irritable
bowel syndrome. However, it was recently reported that electro-acupuncture, in
which a small electrical shock is delivered via the acupuncture needle, could
cause the stomachs of dogs to empty faster. This is the first clear evidence
that acupuncture is able to affect the function of the bowel and suggests that
acupuncture might be useful in treating irritable bowel.

I found that most of IBS are misdiagnosed,in fact,a lot of IBS due to soft
tissue injuries in back area.
What is your opinion?I knew later research showed :There is no evidence
to support the use of acupuncture for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.
Acupuncture for irritable bowel syndrome needs further investigation
Can your bra cause irritable bowel syndrome?
Fashion bras can constrict the rib cage by several inches more than
conventional bras. The pressure can be so great that it could even affect
digestion. The British School of Osteopathy has noted Irritable Bowel
Syndrome and constipation as a result of illfitting bras constricting the
digestive process by putting pressure on the diaphragm. Source:

Acupuncture in IBS is primarily a placebo response. Based on the small
differences found between the AC and SAC groups, a study including 566 patients
would be necessary to prove the efficacy of AC over SAC. The placebo response
may be predicted by high coping capacity and low sleep quality in individual
patients.From GUT online
New IBS Guideline:
IBS patients with diarrhea, or a combination of constipation and diarrhea,
should be screened with blood tests for celiac disease; When IBS patients
have alarm features or are over 50 years old, they should have further
tests: Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from IBS, which often
begins in young adulthood....
