Herbal Medicines For Irritable Bowel Syndrome by Franchis Adam Irritable Bowel Syndrome,
or IBS, is also known as irritable or spastic colon, and there is no real
understanding of why it exists, although it seems to occur when the muscles
that line the walls of the intestines and the colon, go into spasm. The muscles
contract for no apparent reason, causing pain and diarrhea alternating with
constipation. Other symptoms include a cramping pain in the abdomen, swelling,
general malaise and lethargy, back pain, and often, excessive wind. Symptoms
can subside and even disappear for long periods of time, but many sufferers
continue to experience symptoms recurrently throughout their lives. It is a
chronic, irritating, and uncomfortable condition, but it is not
life-threatening and the symptoms can be reduced in many cases by proper
treatment. It is estimated that about 30 percent of people in the West
has suffered from IBS at some stage, and 13 percent of those do so regularly. IBS appears to be brought on and exacerbated by anxiety,
stress, and nervous problems. Symptoms often appear worse during menstruation.
Other causal factors include food intolerance. Orthodox medical treatment has been largely unsuccessful in
the treatment of IBS. Antispasmodic drugs are often recommended but in many
cases they are ineffective. The best way of controlling the condition is by
reducing and learning to cope with stress, and by eating a diet that does not
exacerbate the condition. Treatment Diet and Nutrition Research shows that eating more fiber,
in the form of oats, dried beans, peas, fresh fruit and vegetables, can greatly
reduce the symptoms of IBS, but improvement may take months rather than weeks.
Also, bear in mind that wheat bran, often prescribed as the standard treatment
for IBS, can actually make the condition worse for some sufferers. Eat plenty
of natural, unsweetened live yogurt or take daily supplements of Lactobacillus
acidophilus to boost the levels of healthy bacteria in the digestive system. Different food combinations can cause IBS symptoms in
different individuals: keep a detailed record of everything you eat and drink,
and of all bowel movements and their consistency. Consult a qualified practitioner/therapist for: Counseling and Hypnotherapy Both have been shown to be very
effective in reducing the symptoms. Hypnotherapy has a particularly good
record. Massage, Relaxation Techniques (Including Yoga, Meditation,
and Biofeedback) All these therapies are beneficial. Herbal Medicine A soothing
tea of camomile, peppermint, and fennel is recommended. Herbalists may
prescribe cramp bark, golden seal, wild yam, and licorice. Aromatherapy Essential oils of peppermint or sassafras help relaxation
and reduce painful spasms. Acupuncture This can be beneficial in helping to relieve
IBS. About the Author

Herbal Medicines For Constipation and Diarrhea Treatmentby Franchis Adam
Constipation This is usually caused by insufficient fiber in the diet.
However, lack of fluid, too little exercise, and too much stress can also
contribute. Symptoms of the condition include difficult, irregular, and
infrequent movements of the bowel. Consult a physician if constipation
persists, or immediately if it is associated with vomiting, fever, or abdominal
pain Treatment Herbal Medicine Camomile, hops, fennel, and a natural laxative such as
linseed, will ease constipation. Drink herbal teas rather than coffee. Reflexology and Massage Both can be helpful. Consult a qualified practitioner/therapist for: Acupuncture This can help to relieve stress. Diarrhea Intolerance of certain foods, a virus, or bacteria can be
responsible for diarrhea. It can also be caused by anxiety and a change of
diet. Treatment Diet and Nutrition Drink lots of water and peppermint tea
to replace lost fluid. If symptoms persist, replace lost salts by regularly
drinking a mixture of 1 pt/500mlt water to 1 tablespoonful of sugar and 1
teaspoonful of salt. The water strained off boiled rice is also helpful. Eat
plenty of live yogurt or take half a teaspoonful of Lactobacillus acidophilus
with a teaspoonful of Lactobacillus bulgaricus in a glass of water three times
a day. Avoid solid food. Herbal Medicine Golden seal, and an infusion of agrimony,
plantain, or geranium are helpful, as is peppermint tea. Traditional Chinese Medicine Dandelion, golden thread and
skullcap root are all recommended. Homeopathy Arsenicum alb. 6c and Pulsatilla 6c. Acupressure This can help. Fecal Incontinence A temporary loss of bowel control can occur as a result of
diarrhea. Regular lack of control may result from an injury to the anal muscles
(during childbirth or surgery), or from paralysis or dementia. It can also
result from fecal impaction, a condition in which feces become stuck in the
bowel. This can cause inflammation and lead to the uncontrolled release of
small pieces of feces from the rectum. Treatment Diet and Nutrition Follow a high-fiber, wholefood diet, and
drink plenty of water (at least six large glasses a day). Acupressure and Yoga Both of these treatments are helpful,
especially the practice of abdominal breathing techniques. Homeopathy Causticum 6c is often recommended. About the Author

Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can often be attributed to an improper diet and too much
stress. Here are some tips that can help bring relief to colon disease
sufferers. "Health
begins in the colon" is a frequent saying among naturopathic physicians.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is prevalent in the A
healthy colon means a healthy immune system. When waste sits in the colon
longer than it should (a long transit time), it becomes a perfect environment
for toxins that can eventually cause the whole body to become toxic. It is
estimated that approximately one out of seven people in the The
manifestation of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is unique to each individual. The
symptoms of IBS can be characterized by altered bowel function, diarrhea or
constipation, pain or distention of the abdomen, relief of pain with bowel
movements, and varying degrees of anxiety or depression. The bowel may have a
sensitivity to stress and certain foods or drugs. Here
are some therapeutic considerations for treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome: 1. Eat small, frequent meals. 2. Eat slowly. 3. Eat citrus fruits in small amounts. 4. Avoid beans (they cause gas). Avoid
fried foods and other "trigger" foods such dairy products, wheat
products, carbonated beverages, foods with high sugar content, caffeine, and
chocolate. Sorbitol
(found in sugar-free foods) can be another trigger. I recommend stevia as a
sweetener--it is natural, tastes good, and is less likely to upset your stomach
than artificial sweeteners. Increase
your intake of soluble fibers such as cooked vegetables like asparagus,
mushrooms, zucchini, peeled apples, carrots, oat bran, and barley. Insoluble
fibers tend to be irritants. To
prevent heartburn, take enteric coated peppermint oil capsules between meals.
Peppermint relaxes the GI smooth muscle and acts as an antispasmodic. Take
magnesium every day. Magnesium deficiency is associated with IBS. Magnesium
acts as a muscle relaxant. Supplement
your diet with digestive enzymes to help digest your food and avoid undigested
proteins. Express
your frustrations verbally. "Stuffing" your problems, anger, and
concerns affects you as much physically as it does mentally. I usually give myself
forty-eight hours to vent, then try to forgive and let go of the past. Control
psychological functions through stress reduction techniques like meditation and
exercise. As
always, if symptoms are severe or long-lasting you should consult a physician. Source: http://www.healthguidance.org/authors/396/Dr.-Tina-Marcantel
Dr. Tina Marcantel Dr. Tina Marcantel is a naturopathic
physician in Home Remedies for Diarrhea No
drugs should be taken to control diarrhoea as it has been found that
anti-diarrhoeal drugs and binding mixture may temporarily relieve the symptoms,
but do not really help to cure the disease. Rather they hamper the bowel's
protective function to rid the body of its harmful contents. In
severe cases of diarrhoea, it is advisable to observe a complete fast for two
days to provide rest for the gastro-intestinal tract. Hot water only may be
taken during the period to compensate for the loss of fluids. Juices of fruits
may be taken after the acute symptoms are over. After condition improves, meals
can be enlarged gradually to include cooked vegetables, whole rice, soured
milks. Raw foods should be taken only after the patient completely recovers. An
effective remedy for diarrhoea is the use of buttermilk. It is the residual
milk left after the fat has been removed from yoghurt by churning. It helps
overcome harmful intestinal flora and re-establish the benign or friendly
flora. The acid in the buttermilk also fights germs and bacteria. It may be
mixed with a pinch of salt three or four times a day for controlling diarrhoea.
Carrot
soup is another effective home remedy for diarrhoea. It supplies water to
combat dehydration, replenishes sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sulphur
and magnesium, supplies pectin and coats the intestine to allay inflammation.
It checks the growth of harmful intestinal bacteria and prevents vomitting.
Half a kg. of carrot may be cooked in 150 ml. of water until it is soft. The
pulp should be strained and boiled water added to make a litre. Three-quarter
tablespoon of salt may be mixed. This soup should be given in small amounts to
the patient every half an hour. The
pomegranate has proved beneficial in the treatment of diarrhoea because of its
astringent properties. If the patient develops weakness due to profuse and
continous purging, he should be given repeatedly about 50 ml. of pomegranate
juice to drink. This will control the diarrhoea. Turmeric
has proved another effective home remedy for diarrhoea. It is a very useful
intestinal antiseptic. It is also a gastric stimulant and a tonic. Turmeric
rhizome, its juice or dry powder are all very helpful in curing chronic
diarrhoea. In the form of dry powder, it ma y be taken in buttermilk or plain
water. In
case of diarrhoea caused by indigestion, dry or fresh ginger is very useful. A
piece of dry ginger is powdered along with a crystal of rock salt. A quarter
teaspoon of this powder should be taken with a small piece of jaggery. It will
bring quick relief as ginger, being carminative, aids digestion by stimulating
the gastro-intestinal tract. Starchy
liquids such as arrowroot water, barley water, rice grual and coconut water are
beneficial in the treatment of diarrhoea. They not only replace the fluid lost
but also bind the stools. Other home remedies include bananas and garlic.
Bananas contain pectin and encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria. Garlic
is a powerful, effective and harmless antibiotic. It aids digestion and routs
parasites. Source: http://www.healthguidance.org/authors/371/Krishan-Bakhru
Krishan Bakhru Krishan Bakhru is the editor of http://www.easyhomeremedy.com. Herbs For Hemorrhoids Many
people prefer to treat the distressing condition of hemorrhoids with natural
remedies. Firstly, the condition must be properly diagnosed by a doctor, and if
natural remedies fail then the appropriate medication must be obtained. A lot
of sufferers find that herbs for hemorrhoids are the answer. Several
different applications of herbs for hemorrhoids have grown up over the years.
Witch Hazel is one such popular choice, even suggested by some medical
professionals. Barbers are familiar with its properties, as they use it on
cuts, making the blood vessels contract. Applying Witch Hazel with a cotton
ball is recommended for external hemorrhoids, especially where bleeding occurs.
Anything cold, even plain old water can help to relive the pain of hemorrhoids,
so you'll feel the benefits of putting a Witch Hazel bottle in an ice bucket.
Soak a sterile cotton ball with the Witch Hazel and gently dab against the
hemorrhoids until the coldness wears off. Keep repeating the process. Another
product in the herbs for hemorrhoids range contains Japanese Pagoda Tree
extract. This is said to attack the actual causes of the hemorrhoids and to
permanently stop itching, burning and pain. It's also claimed that it will
strengthen the veins and help the vascular circulation, thus preventing
hemorrhoids in the future. Other herbs for hemorrhoids include Horse Chestnut,
Butcher's Broom, and Bayberry. A strong, warm tea containing Yarrow can be
applied, again with a cotton ball. Aloe Vera is recommended for both burning
and pain. Other herbs for hemorrhoids can be taken, either in the form of tea or
in capsules. Source: http://www.healthguidance.org/authors/504/Jeanette-Pollock
